USD athletic director leaving, takes Sanford job https://www.keloland.com/news/local-news/usd-athletic-director-leaving-takes-sanford-job/ Mon, 14 Aug 2023 18:58:51 +0000 https://www.keloland.com/?p=1628931 SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The University of South Dakota will be looking for a new athletic director.

On Monday, USD announced athletic director David Herbster will be leaving his position Aug. 30 for a new career opportunity on the community relations team for Sanford Health. Herbster has been South Dakota’s athletic director since 2013.  Herbster makes $195,470.43 as the USD athletic director, according to the Open South Dakota government website.

University officials say a national search for a new athletic director will start in January and hope to name a new athletic director before the 2024 Summit League basketball tournament.

Mike Alden, former University of Missouri athletic director and CEO of MRJ Advisors, will serve as special assistant to the president during the transition.

“The University of South Dakota thanks David for his exceptional service and dedication to our athletic program,” USD President Sheila Gestring said in a news release. “As an integral part of the Coyote community for the last decade, David’s leadership has left a lasting impact on the lives of our student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers and staff. USD's athletic program has flourished over the past decade under his leadership, and we appreciate all his efforts in building a strong foundation for USD’s future athletic success.”

Under Herbster, USD built the Sanford Coyote Sports Center, renovated the DakotaDome and expanded the USD Wellness Center.

“For the past 16 years, I have been blessed to work alongside so many outstanding student-athletes, coaches, staff, donors, fans and members of the campus community,” Herbster said in a news release. “Seeing where we were when I arrived on campus in 2007 to where we are now is truly amazing. The progress we have made athletically and institutionally is a testament to the strength and vibrancy of this campus.”

Herbster said the time was right for his family and himself to leave.

“I want to thank President Abbott for first allowing me to lead Coyote Athletics, and to President Gestring for her ongoing support, guidance and leadership,” Herbster said in a news release. “I also want to thank all the student-athletes, coaches, staff and all of Coyote Nation for making this such a rewarding and memorable experience.”

Gestring said USD will be looking to bring in an experienced leader as its next athletic director.

“Our focus is bringing a proven, high-integrity individual who puts student-athletes first and wins the right way,” Gestring said in a news release. “We look forward to continuing a legacy of excellence in Coyote Athletics now and into the future.”

Canaries sweep Milwaukee, extend winning streak to 8 https://www.keloland.com/sports/canaries-sweep-milwaukee-extend-winning-streak-to-8/ Sun, 13 Aug 2023 23:55:35 +0000 https://www.keloland.com/?p=1628262 Sioux Falls, S.D. (Canaries) -- The Canaries’ pitching staff threw a combined shutout on Sunday and struck out 12 as the Birds topped Milwaukee 6-0 at the Bird Cage. The win extends the Birds’ season-long winning streak to eight consecutive games, the franchise’s longest since August 2008.

Logan Eickhoff’s first professional hit came in the fifth inning and opened the scoring as Darnell Sweeney crossed home plate after drawing a walk to begin the frame.

The Birds added five more runs in the seventh inning. A balk put Sioux Falls up 2-0 before Jordan Barth drove in two with a double and extended his hitting streak to 16 consecutive games. Two more runs scored on a fielding error before Milwaukee could escape the inning.

Mitchell Walters earned his team-leading seventh win, striking out eight over six innings. Wyatt Ulrich recorded his 59th career stolen base, tying Dan Motl for second in franchise history. The Canaries are now 40-41 and the team’s 27 home wins are the most since the 2012 season. Following an off day on Monday, Sioux Falls will open a three-game series at Kansas City Tuesday night.

Gray strikes out 7, Luplow homers as Twins top Phils https://www.keloland.com/sports/gray-strikes-out-7-luplow-homers-as-twins-top-phils/ Sun, 13 Aug 2023 23:54:01 +0000 https://www.keloland.com/?p=1628258 PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Sonny Gray tossed two-hit ball over six shutout innings, reliever Caleb Thielbar pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh and Jordan Luplow homered to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

The AL Central leaders bounced back from a 13-2 loss in the series opener to win the last two games. Gray (6-5) struck out seven and pitched into the sixth inning in his eighth straight start.

Gray allowed just two singles and otherwise quieted a Phillies' offense that had hit 20 homers over the last eight games.

Yet after 80 pitches, that was enough for Gray.

It almost cost the Twins.

Griffin Jax allowed two singles and hit a batter to load the bases with one out and to send the Philly crowd into a frenzy. Thielbar got the call from the bullpen and the lefty got left-handed slugger Kyle Schwarber to pop out. Thielbar then went to a full count on Alec Bohm and caught him looking at strike three on a close call at the knees. Bohm spiked his bat like teammate Rhys Hoskins did after a memorable postseason home run last year, except his was in frustration, not excitement.

Bohm was promptly ejected by plate umpire Alex MacKay.

MacKay was serenaded by “Ump, you suck!” chants in the eighth.

The chants only grew louder after Thiebar struck out Bryce Harper to open the inning. Phillies manager Rob Thomson was ejected after a brief, calm — but impolite — discussion with MacKay.

Emilio Pagán retired the last two batters in the eighth and Jhoan Durán worked the ninth for his 21st save.

The Phillies finished 6-4 on a 10-game homestand that kept them in first place in the NL wild-card standings. But consecutive losses were a sour end to a home stretch that included standing ovations for Trea Turner, a no-hitter by Michael Lorenzen, career homer No. 200 for Nick Castellanos, season homer No. 30 for Schwarber and majors-first homers for Weston Wilson and Johan Rojas.

Phillies starter Ranger Suarez (2-6) threw mostly fine against the Twins but allowed Ludlow's two-out homer in the first and Jorge Polanco's RBI single in the third. Polanco added an RBI single in the ninth to help the Twins finish 3-4 on their seven-game road trip.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Thomson said Harper, who left one game early and missed another because of back spasms, could return to first base sometime this week after serving as the DH the last two games.

LET’S CELEBRATE

The Phillies honored the 1983 and 1993 National League championship teams. Steve Carlton, Mike Schmidt and Curt Schilling were among the players introduced before the game.

UP NEXT

Twins: Minnesota has a day off and then plays two games at home against Detroit. The Tigers send RHP Alex Faedo (2-4, 4.80 ERA) to the mound Tuesday against Twins RHP Bailey Ober (6-6, 3.40 ERA).

Phillies: Philadelphia is off Monday before playing a two-game set in Toronto. The Blue Jays send RHP Yusei Kikuchi (9-4, 3.53 ERA) to the mound Tuesday against Phillies RHP Zack Wheeler (9-5, 3.74 ERA).

Barth walks it off again, Birds win seventh in a row https://www.keloland.com/sports/barth-walks-it-off-again-birds-win-seventh-in-a-row/ Sun, 13 Aug 2023 04:12:55 +0000 https://www.keloland.com/?p=1627916 Sioux Falls, S.D. (Canaries) -- Jordan Barth ripped a walkoff double in the tenth inning to propel the Canaries past Milwaukee 4-3 on Saturday.

The Milkmen opened the scoring with a two-run homerun in the second inning but Mike Hart tied the game with a two-run single in the third.

Milwaukee went back in front in the top of the fourth on an RBI single but Hunter Clanin threw out a runner trying to score from second base to keep the deficit at one.

Shamoy Christopher tied the game with a solo homerun in the seventh inning and the 3-3 score held until Barth’s game-winning double in the tenth.

Barth and Clanin each finished with two hits as the Canaries (39-41) have now won seven consecutive games. The Birds will look to sweep the six-game homestand when the two teams meet again Sunday at 12:05pm.
